WHY EPBD REVISION IS SO IMPORTANT?

Everything starts at home. Home is also the place where we return after a busy day or a week-long travel. We all prefer to come into a safe, warm, healthy and cosy place.  It is therefore worrying to see that 84 million people in Europe still live in unhealthy homes causing asthma, COPD and other chronical decises. 54 million is suffering from energy poverty, where the above often doesn’t necessary apply.

Ideas in the EU Energy union package being discussed in the EU’s political arena offer a lot of positive and even strategic solution for the low carbon future saving our planet for the future generations. But political ideas demand financial support and funding. More then ever the need for more private funding resonates in Brussels discussions. I strongly believe the affordable technical solutions and willingness to invest are very much present in the private sector.

It is much more worrying that the potential of buildings is being underestimated ever since. Sadly,  I see the EPBD revision being downgraded to a second level of importance while it should be the number one. Electric cars are a matter of time to spread widely, increased demand flexibility of Renewables as well. We can create financial tools to make that happen.

Why don’t we use the same amount of enthusiasm when we create funds for healthier and more energy efficient buildings? I’m strongly convinced that on the long run this will certainly reduce costs and pressure on the public healthcare systems.

It wouldn’t be to much exaggerating if I would say that Europeans, like me (and you?) expect our European and national leaders to take responsible and ambitious decision in the trialog on the 5/12 – maximizing our health benefits and indoor comfort in buildings in which we live, work, train and make love.

…… creating better future starts at home. I hope you’ll have a healthy sleep. Tomorrow is a new day.
